The Evolution of Nike Air – From Gas to Liquid
Since the debut of the Tailwind model in 1979, Nike has continuously modified its cushioning technology using compressed gas. The breakthrough came in 1987 with the window in the Air Max 1, and decades later, VaporMax eliminated foam entirely. However, engineers in Oregon needed a new revolution, and the partnership with Yeat, fascinated by futuristic forms, proved to be the perfect testing ground.
About the project: Liquid silver on your feet and the 'ADL' project
Instead of using existing bases, Nike gave the artist a new silhouette: Air Liquid Max. The technology is based on the use of an advanced, non-Newtonian fluid injected into flexible polyurethane tubes that wrap around the sole. The fluid hardens in a fraction of a second upon impact with the ground, then immediately returns to its liquid state, releasing energy.
Visually, the shoe is a cyberpunk masterpiece. The upper is made of dark grey, ballistic neoprene with no visible seams, protected by matte, polyurethane overlays. The whole resembles tactical armor. The shoe's release is closely linked to the artist's latest musical release – 'ADL', and for the fastest fans, special boxes in the shape of metal canisters have been prepared, containing the album, a limited balaclava, and the shoe itself.
Nike's new project is a revolution – you either ride this wave, or you're left on the shore in shoes from a bygone era.
