Nike SB has tapped into one of the most unusual yet iconic animations of the late '90s and early 2000s to create the Nike SB x The Powerpuff Girls collection. It's a design that might seem surprising at first glance, but upon closer inspection, it perfectly aligns with the way the SB line has long fused skateboarding with pop culture, nostalgia, and powerful storytelling.
The Powerpuff Girls is an animated series created by Craig McCracken for Cartoon Network, which debuted in 1998. The story of three girls—Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup—created in Professor Atomus's laboratory quickly became a global phenomenon. The series combined a childlike aesthetic with dynamic action, humor, and distinctly defined characters. Each character represented a different temperament, making the Powerpuff Girls recognizable not just as a cartoon but as a symbol of an entire era of pop culture.

The path to the collaboration with Nike SB wasn't accidental. For years, the SB line has explored themes that transcend skateboarding, reaching into films, music, anime, and video games. The Powerpuff Girls perfectly fit this philosophy—colorful, distinctive, and yet deeply rooted in the culture of a whole generation. The project was conceived as a conscious homage to the aesthetic of the "Sail Box Era," a period in which Nike SB experimented particularly extensively with form, graphics, and the narrative surrounding its footwear.
The collection features three versions of the Nike SB Dunk Low , each dedicated to a specific character. Blossom represents pink and orange tones, Bubbles features shades of blue and yellow, and Buttercup features green and black. The uppers are constructed from shiny, satin-like materials, directly referencing the texture and color scheme of the animated character. A distinctive detail is the large, embroidered eyes on the heels, which immediately identify the character the model is dedicated to.
The secondary details are equally important. The insoles feature dedicated graphics, the tongues and branding vary depending on the version, and the semi-transparent soles conceal additional illustrations inspired by the series. The overall design allows each model to function independently, yet also create a cohesive ensemble when viewed as a whole. This is an example of design where color and form are not random, but emerge directly from the narrative.
Nike SB x The Powerpuff Girls is a full-fledged cultural project. The collection fuses the world of skateboarding with the animation that has shaped the imaginations of millions worldwide. On the one hand, it's a nostalgic return to childhood, and on the other, a conscious use of aesthetics that still work today. It's one of those collaborations that demonstrates Nike SB's unafraid to take risks while simultaneously telling stories in a cohesive, thoughtful, and authentic way.
